The Safe Mortgage Act was passed on July 30, 2008. The essence os the Safe Mortgage Act is to enhance consumer protection and reduce fraud through the setting of minimum standards for the licensing and registration of state-licensed mortgage loan originators.
The Safe Mortgage Act requires loan originators to complete pre-license education courses, pass a written exam, and complete annual continuing education classes. It also requires fingerprinting for background checks as well as an independent credit report.
Safe Mortgage Licensing
As described previously, SAFE mortgage licensing only comes at the completion of the mandated pre-license education courses and the successful passing of a written exam. Once these requirements are met, this information is reported to the NMLS and kept in their system as required by federal government.
